Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from national security to environmental monitoring. Their wide use has addressed a major flaw among these networks, which is energy conservation. The mission is to have every target to be inside the sensing boundaries of one sensor at minimum. In this paper we propose an efficient Set Cover Min Cost (SCMC) approach to maximize WSN lifetime and minimize energy consumption by using a set cover method for creating clusters, and a min-cost flow method for routing. A linear programming (LP) formulation for such problem is presented. This formulation considers minimizing energy for all nodes in each set cover (cluster), and then minimizing routing energy between nodes and base station through intermediate nodes, namely cluster heads. To evaluate the performance of such scheme, extensive simulations with different scenarios are conducted. The results show that the set cover approach combined with the min-cost flow algorithm reduces energy consumption and increases lifetime and network throughput.
