Abstract

Currently, social communication is increasingly manifested through a set of new types of text and visual products, which are certain communication channels aimed at transmitting information, while performing pedagogic, educational, entertainment and other functions. The phenomenon of polymodality of such products includes the variation of sign systems, namely: verbal, visual and symbolic. Multimodal texts are a valuable communicative space for the transmission and perception of information that determines the interest of linguists towards their studies. A comic paper is a form of verbal-visual communication, which is implemented through certain channels of information perception by the reader. At the same time, the verbal means of displaying information in the comic paper are considered as a system that has established rules acquired in the process of development; and the drawing and the system of signs are determined by the author¡¯s expressive goals developing during training or practice. The purpose of the academic paper lies in studying the principal directions of the English-language comic papers in scientific literature and clarifying some practical aspects of its linguistic and extralinguistic features. Methodology. In the course of the research, the analytical-bibliographic method was applied to study the scientific literature on the specifics of using verbal and paraverbal elements of the text in English-language comic papers, as well as a questionnaire survey for the practical clarification of certain aspects of the issue raised. Results. Based on the results of the research, the main types of verbal and extralingual means used in English-language comic papers were studied, as well as the features of verbal and extralingual means from the perspective of the multimodality of their application were revealed.
