Abstract |
Face detection is an important stage in facial recognition systems. Research work by Voila and Jones has matured face detection technology for frontal faces. Further extensions enhanced face detection for non-frontal faces. However occlusion is still a research challenge for face detection research community. In Islamic culture, women cover their faces by veil and that is a substantial occlusion for face detection algorithms. Successful face detectors even fail for such occlusions. This paper investigates the performance of Voila and Jones face detector for veiled faces with standard Haar features and modified Haar features suitable for veiled face detection. Excellent face detection results are experienced by the proposed Haar features for veiled occluded faces. |
