Abstract

This paper presents a self-recovering and self-stabilizing buffer memory controller for communication systems based on cellular automata concepts. The proposed model is a FIFO (First-In First-Out) type of memory that meets the conditions for a communica-tion buffer. By binding together a number of cells that can perform basic FIFO operations, we found that each cell is capable of determining whether or not it is holding the first valid data in a queue based on information about its own status and its neigh-boring cells. We also observed that this model possesses a capacity for self-recovery, which always enables the buffer to return to a normal state in the event of an internal transient fault.
