Abstract

In this paper, a mobile mapping application called JMMA (J2ME-Based Mobile Mapping Application) is presented to show that geographical information and mapping applications can be effectively delivered over J2ME-enabled mobile phones that have got limited capabilities. JMMA is a client/server network application runs on a user¡¯s mobile phone and connects to an Internet enabled database server machine thru a wireless connection. The application software, which persists on the client, was developed using the Sun¡¯s J2ME Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). Borland J2ME Wireless Toolkit (WTK) was used as an emulation and testing environment. The result of the work proves that it is possible to implement Location Based Services and mapping applications over J2ME-enabled mobile phones and gives some important design and implementation hints for the followers.
