Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the signalling protocols H.323 (ITU-T standard) and SIP (IETF standard). We compare both protocols and note that although H.323 has more share of the market at present, SIP is a much better protocol given its simplicity and scalability. We also discuss the factors affecting voice quality and the techniques of optimizing voice quality, as well as common architectures in VoIP networks. Finally, we analyse the advantages of employing VoIP technologies for the integration of different voice services in data networks, using distributed architectures.
