Abstract

The major cause of generating clock components in an optical spectrum of a nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signal is investigated and a simple clock recovery scheme for NRZ signals is proposed. Theoretical analysis shows that the nonlinear property of Mach-Zehnder (MZ) modulator is responsible for generating the clock components and that the power of the clock components can vary more than 30 dB for different rise/fall times of NRZ pulses. Based on theoretical analysis, a clock recovery scheme which consists of two fiber Bragg grating (FBG) filters and a variable optical attenuator (VOA) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the attenuation range can be approximately extended to the second power of the maximum attenuation value of a VOA. The proposed scheme realized optical clock recovery through a beating process.
