Abstract

Multicast applications need ""data origin authentication"", or ""source authentication"", in order to guarantee that a received message had originated from a given source, and was not manipulated during the transmission As the online population continues to expand, the Internet is increasingly used to distribute streamed media, such as streamed radio and video. To provide data origin authentication for multicast data streams, this paper proposed secure authentication protocol for multicast data streams within the Secure Real-time Transport Protocol. The use of the Secure Source Authentication (SSA) allows all receivers to check authenticated source of each packet in multicast data streams. SSA requires no trust between receivers and requires no per-receiver state at the sender. SSA can protect receivers against denial of service attacks in certain circumstances.
